My Story Continued ... Assume Nothing, Discover Everything
In healing myself, I certainly made it through some stressful crazy times and learned that beyond just getting back to my version of “normal”, there was so much more to regain, evolve through, and progress beyond.
At a certain point, I had seen body workers of various kinds – massage therapists, rolfers, chiropractors, and acupuncturists. Spoken with all sorts of intuitives, astrologers, studied with many elder yoga teachers, hired therapists and counselors, as well as a very “East meets West” M.D. and OBGYN in Beverly Hills.
After many more years of side-study and self-study, I found a “healer” who blew my socks off. No, this gifted individual does not have fancy degrees, certifications, nor any online presence much less a marketing plan, and I would not be where I am today if I had not found his work. I can thank my Los Angeles yoga community for that connection.
Life is funny though, it will continually hand you exactly what you need. So we must keep our beginner mindset in tact and never assume that even within our own professions that we know all there is to know. I have heard locally just in the past year: “I already know everything there is to know.” in reference to teaching yoga and “I don’t need to hear about your offerings, that is what we already do.” from a wellness provider - without even experiencing the work. As mentioned prior though, life is funny and will continually hand us what we need.
This was simply motivation to continue adding experiences with additional teachers, therapists and several different types of coaches. Another true highlight has been dropping into a full neurofeedback session with Nick Kraus of NeuraLogic. While I had previously explored neurofeedback and assessed my own, I had not yet had a full evaluation with an expert. I learned a lot about what is going really well within my brain - which I can honestly contribute to daily commitments to yoga, meditation, nutrition, hydration, movement, self-care, and all realms of holistic health. I also learned a lot about where there is trauma. I would not have guessed trauma existed in the first place, and certainly not after so much commitment to making change happen. However, I had been hitting the wall in one area over and over again without understanding why I could not seem to completely regulate my system. We all know commitments to practices such as yoga, pranayama and meditation assist in resetting the parasympathetic nervous system. Yet as time goes by, with where the modern world is heading, all of our systems are being hijacked on the daily due to technology alone. So this is an ongoing battle for anyone who wants to stay well. I could be much worse off without these practices. However, in gaining info from the neurofeedback session, I was able to back off and not be so hard on myself regarding specific triggers knowing that to a degree, neurobiology was at play. Phew, what a load off. This knowledge has assisted me greatly in trusting the tools I have in place, ignoring physical, mental, emotional reactions as best I can, resulting in better communication, discussion, and transmutation of past experiences. Super awesome feeling.
Next up, given my age, I dropped into another full medical work up. After speaking with several doctors locally and otherwise, I chose M.D. and functional medicine doctor, Dr. Ben Kaplan-Singer. His work and "bedside manner" are absolutely unparalleled and equally enlightening. To know there are doctors out there with this kind of attention to detail and client care is truly refreshing. In practicing what I preach, this updated work up has allowed me to figure a system that works best for me and only me as an individual - which is the bottom line within holistic coaching. You can spend a hell of lot of money on nutrition and supplements and vitamins and minerals and green juices and cleanses and so on and so forth. Those businesses will gladly continue to tap your bank account and at some pretty hefty ongoing prices. But how do you really know you are doing what is right for YOU? How do you know your hard earned dollars are being put toward what is truly working within your system? Working with Dr. Ben proved to be yet another educational and absolutely valuable experience.
Dr. Ben and I now both work with the same health share group (a.k.a. health insurance) that I chose to move into in 2015 after learning about them through the functional medicine community. My entire workup with him was covered after meeting my small deductible. I would love to guide you towards a health care system that works with you and for you. Email Me.
All I can say is... even within your own industry, never assume you know everything. Always be a beginner. Always be a student. Change is inevitable. Change is constant. THIS is how you will heal, find optimal wellbeing, and climb from peak to peak. Progression is potent. With progression and optimal health comes everything else. Questions? #SessionIt
