Everything we do is about finding your freedom.

Why “Après”? Because “after” coaching, you will find your line.

Inspired by riding mountains and surfing oceans, Après Coaching Sessions are a nod to the discipline and diligence necessary to master these epic environments, the freedom found in doing so, and the reward of post-excursion celebrations known as après-ski. Après Sessions, on and off the mountain, are holistic meaning an integrated whole experience.

Holistic health coaching considers the whole human system to spearhead what we find in the state of “flow” resulting in optimal performance and wellness in all realms of life.

Summer Lovin' & Conscious Relationships

What does "conscious relationship" mean to you?

Relationships are on the holistic health list because they are one realm of many that equate to an integrated, whole, healthy life. Friendship. Family. Acquaintances. Business. Intimate. What might we be pretending not to know about our relationships? What does it mean to be in a “conscious relationship”? How can we foster some summer lovin’ this month and every month?

This is a considerable conversation, but at the most basic level, when confrontation occurs, or you are triggered by another in any way, it is always an opportunity to step back, take a deep breath, and take a few minutes to put yourself in the other person’s shoes. Of course, this is often easier said than done – especially in that moment when you become fired up before you even realize what is happening. But, with a few extra tools and techniques, you’d be surprised how quickly you can transform and diffuse many of these moments from highly reactive to open, spacious and rewarding.

One of the best ways to put ourselves in another’s shoes is to ask ourselves: Does this person need to be right? Or do they want peace? Do I need to be right about this? Or do I prefer peace? Is this a topic worthy of fuss and fight?

If it seems a friend always wants “his way”, how can we take a look at this within ourselves? If a client insists on billing top dollar within her own business, but is unwilling to pay top dollar for another’s work, is it wise to continue this relationship? If one’s expectations of what will be received in a relationship are different from what will be given, how can we put ourselves in the other person’s shoes and decide from their perspective if this is fair, just, or if it even makes sense? A few basic examples within first glance of becoming more conscious within our relationships.

Relationships are one of the most complex elements of life. It is important to be in them. It is equally important to spend time away from them. It is important to be vulnerable and be open to them. It is important to realize when we shy away from them or are unable to take space from them. It may sound like stating the obvious, but it is important to put ourselves in one another’s shoes. It is safe to assume that the other party wants a peaceful existence, too, even if they do not realize it themselves. Only the beginning... keeping these thoughts in place is the gateway to more conscious ways of relating... toward more summer lovin’. #SessionIt

Based in Miami Beach, Mike Tewel, Founder and CEO of ARTRPRNR is an example of the quintessential American story: He grew up in a large family where money was always a struggle. Being the oldest he felt the pressure to chase money, so at the age of 19 he took a sales job in a very profit driven company which eventually led him to starting his own company and becoming an entrepreneur.

Turning 30, he had found success, but not “whole-hearted” success. He had done well, but wanted to do more, this time with heart and soul. Fresh out of a long relationship, he took off for a brief vacation to Costa Rica. He had come to the realization that his personal growth needed some attention, canceled his return ticket and stayed for a month. During this time, he committed to two things. Commitment  #1 was to read one book per month, which was a big challenge at the time coming from a fast paced lifestyle. Commitment #2 was to travel for at least one week every month. By making this time and space for himself, he was able to drop in to what *Mike* really wanted out of life. He read not 12, but 20, books that year and spent a lot more than 12 weeks traveling.

During that first trip to Costa Rica, he also began practicing yoga and eventually added meditation. These tools and experiences along with his commitment to personal development brought him to the realization that his values did not align with his businesses partner at that time and it was time to make a change. This series of events and his personal dedications sent him down the path to where he is today.

While driving on the freeway in Los Angeles, he was listening to a podcast that talked about licensing your ideas to brands and earning royalties. This struck a chord. He thought, “If I can gain a small percentage of every idea I come up with, I would never have to work.” “But how do I find businesses to offer my ideas?”

He had always rubbed shoulders with many artists and over time they turned to him for advice given these folks don’t usually have a natural inclination toward business. It was here he noticed a void… To bridge the gap, he first created an event called “Innovators and Executors” with his friend, Israel Brod. The Innovators wore white, the Executors wore black. He threw himself into the arena of event production which he did not know much about, and what do ya know, made some magic happen. The event was successful and he now had a database he felt he needed to engage, so he started a newsletter which led to a blog then known as ThinQBeta.

But it was time to do what all high performers must do, dig a little deeper. He really needed to walk his talk. He wanted to find more direction to spearhead his intentions. So he dropped into himself again.

Mike made space and time to write down what he wanted. Visualizing what it would look like and connecting to the emotions and feelings derived from what it would feel like to find what he was seeking. He also honed in on the 80/20 rule asking himself where he could find the most fulfillment with the lowest compromise of his lifestyle values. He found:

1.  freedom to be location independent
2. connection with intelligent high achievers / creating opportunities for growth while meeting the emotional needs of human connection

Enter the rebrand. Introducing ARTRPRNR.

This was the scariest move yet. “I jumped into something I knew nothing about with no existing resources or industry connections”. In his previous businesses, he was more reactive and found opportunity among his existing network. This time he was being proactive, but he was completely on his own.

Within holistic health, we have learned that if we are not challenging ourselves, we are not growing. We are not pushing ourselves enough. Or often, we are pushing ourselves too much and in inefficient and unsustainable ways. At Après Sessions, we have honed in on an exact percentage that qualifies for growth without burnout. As high performers, we must continually turn and tweak the knobs and levers within our human design to continue to perform daily in a manner that serves everyone we encounter each day. Here is where we find that sweet spot where life aligns and we feel and perform at our very best.

ARTRPRNR’s Founder, Mike Tewel, has hit his sweet spot in highlighting creative influencers elevating humanity. Creativity, entrepreneurship, wellbeing and wanderlust wrapped up into one beautiful package. With a sweet membership program launching soon, their online magazine with a travel and lifestyle focus is not to be missed. And for all you analog lovers such as myself, a very limited print edition is in queue, too.

Mike was kind enough to reach out last year featuring me as a creative and entrepreneur within wellness. Mike, we thank you immensely for taking the time and space to drop into you, find what serves not only you, but your community, and take not only yourself, but those around you, from where you are now to where you want to be.

Hey you. We need you now. Let’s Apres.

Plastics – Stop the Madness – Make Great Choices

Note: Since writing this article, we were elated to see in Tuesday's email from The Hustle that WeWork, who is setting the bar on banning plastics and much more, will be followed by Starbucks and American Airlines in terms of plastic use. Now Starbucks, might we discuss how many paper cups (our trees!) are being used globally every single day?

Long time No Plastics advocates know change doesn’t come easy. Much like changing habits within holistic health, change for the better of our environment takes first and foremost paying attention. It involves a shift in mindset. Our environments play a large part of our holistic health, so at Après Sessions, we are lifelong environmental advocates and activists. We must put attention on all environmental toxins and waste such as plastics, and yes paper, and pay attention to every single time we employ them.

Spending a lot of time in the oceans and mountains, as the decades go by, we have unfortunately seen quite a rise in the appearance of plastics in our great outdoors. From surfing amongst plastic grocery bags in the waters of Southern California, to hiking trails and happening upon plastic silverware and water bottles left in the backcountry of Wyoming, to seeing plastic at the bottom of a pristine lake in the middle of nowhere British Columbia, it seems plastics, single-use and otherwise, are literally everywhere we go. Over the past couple decades, the increase has been nothing but obvious.

And this is only what we actually see!

We have all heard about plastic buildups the size of small countries in the vast waters of Mother Earth’s oceans, tormenting and killing wildlife, not to mention polluting our human bodies and brains.

As we travel spreading our passion for holistic health, our desire to better our environments for our families, teams and everyone we come in contact with, is ever increased. Third world countries and first world countries alike, due to lack of education, have no idea what is happening. Triple-bag those six-packs of bottled water at the grocery check-outs in progressive Oregon and rural Virgin Islands? Sure! Jeez, let’s please stop this madness. Still seeing this mindless offering of plastic bags all over the U.S. at this point is downright ignorant.

But even when we are mindful, the potential for using more plastics when we travel – especially of the single-use variety – goes sky high. We really have to be on top of it.

Here is a brief list on how to Say No to Plastics & Stop the Madness. And if you are already aware of these, how often are you employing them? How can you add a new habit to your list? How might you avoid single-use plastics altogether?!

~ Avoid grocery items in plastic containers

~ Avoid grocery items wrapped in plastics of any kind

~ Bring your own cloth grocery bag to the market

~ Forgot your own grocery bag? Ooops guess you should purchase another one.

~ Ask your local grocery to discontinue use of plastic bags

~ Boycott grocery stores that ignore this request

~ Call and Write your government officials regarding plastic grocery bags. Start local. For example, the city of Los Angeles banned the plastic bag several years ago. If a major U.S. city can make it happen, yours can, too.

~ Look for food items in glass instead of plastic – often they are available. But it’s not the brand you love? Write the brand you love and ask them to end use of plastics.

~ Reuse those same glass jars and containers

~ If you must buy hummus in plastic. Reuse plastic until it falls apart. Yeah it probably won’t for a long long time.

~ Support your local farmer’s market – have yet to visit one that offers plastics

~ Travel with your own coffee mug that can double as a water bottle

~ Travel with your own silverware so that you never have to use plastic to-go ware

~ Own a coffee shop? Offer a deposit for customers to bring back mugs versus offering to-go cups of any kind. BOOM.

~ Avoid plastic straws - preferably all straws - all the time

~ Ask restaurants that automatically serve plastic straws to please ask customers first or even better please stop offering plastic of any kind

~ Avoid purchasing water in plastic bottles – your personal health and the environment’s depends on this.

~ Next time you lose your plastic water bottle, replace it with a bottle made with sustainable material

Short list actually, but a super start. Even for experienced environmental activists, it’s easy to get lazy, we all forget, no one is perfect, but paying attention and becoming mindful can be motivation.

We would not be who we are as people nor as an organization and community without this beautiful environment we have been gifted.

Let’s make great choices. Stop the madness. #SessionIt

Neurochemicals that Make You Go HELL YEAH - Part Deux

Like everything, it’s about balance. The “Hell Yeah Neurochemicals” can turn a regular dude into a total ski bum who wakes up at 65 and goes oh shit I forgot to do – everything else I wanted to do in life. So those highs we get from skiing, surfing, practicing yoga, and meditating are superb practices for finding zen, the zone, runner’s high, and ultimately what is now commonly known as “flow”, in everything we do. But balance, leading to optimal and then extraordinary performance, is truly the way.

While we prefer to foster these states so that we can work smart and play hard versus analyze everything to death, many folks (Type A’s - cheers to you) want to know details. Curiosity is certainly a key ingredient in a lot of what makes a holistic lifestyle sing, so here goes…

If you are here, you’ve either dropped in as a client or as a person surfing the world wide web like so many of us chasing down answers for years. Chances are you have dropped your drama, you are in the shit of it, you are seeing changes and you’re hungry for more. Curiosity is the driver. Essentially you’ve hit 70-80% in the way of personal and professional development and you are ready to rock, but you’re still hanging on to this or that, perhaps battling drama in some realm of life, or feel you simply have not yet hit your full stride.

Well – Congratulations!

You are now welcome to just drop all of that. Every single bit of it. Whatever got you to this point, hey – we’re sorry, we’re proud, we’re excited, and we’re right there with you – we have these insane stories and challenges that perhaps another has not, that perhaps not one living soul knows about, that blah blah blah – yep it’s kinda like that – seemingly incessant. But at 70-80% of working through all of it, usually with a good amount of life experience under our belts as well, we are alive and loving it and dropping the rest of it sure is a load off… and it may still take some time, but hey it’s the last load. Essentially, we are here, we showed up, over and over, now we share. Corny as hell, but true. We’ve checked ourselves, over and over, gotten over ourselves (well, hopefully mostly), we have done oh so much individual work and now have an arsenal of tools and techniques ready when the next challenges arrive, as we know they will, and that’s all that matters.

In these modern times, and especially in the United States today with so much insane eruption, and therefore hope for more change and social justice, we do have to get really real with ourselves, do our diligence, get gritty and go deep in order to transform and progress. No one is safe! Avoid much? Yep well whatever it is that gets your goat will be right back. Interested in the trendy “abundance” in all realms of life that everyone is chatting about? Yeah, well that takes stepping up and dropping the rest of whatever brought you to exactly where you are right now. That last little bit. Thank it. And move it along. It might be back. Just note it when it returns, work toward greater understanding of it in order to continually learn, integrate, transmute, and yep, thank it again.

Folks who have been handed easier paths often don’t even begin to understand, but huge kudos to those who are actually willing to be real about it, offer it up and equally give thanks to good ol’ luck. (Both Obama and Letterman do so on Letterman’s Netflix show – great example.) It is rare to hear this from fortunate business people, funded artists, or pro athletes. No doubt they still put in hella effort to make progression happen. But so have you. You have organically done the work. You are truly self-made. You have had the ability and determination to dig deep over and over in order to progress. You are resourceful as hell. You are a survivor. So, yep, you deserve just as much credit as that guy. We are not afraid to call BS on the ridiculousness of where even the wellness industry has gone, such as social media bots, straight up lack of authenticity, and we prefer to focus on supporting those who clearly walk their talk on the daily with true spirit shining through the plethora of shallow content, ridiculous red tape, and non-stop selfies. Having intel from those in the know, we don’t have much time as a country or world to remedy the direction we are going. Yet we again have an opportunity to shift the landscape, and we need you now.

The takeaway is that just because people are capable of finding fleeting glimpses of “oneness” in the physical realm or “success” in business, or omg the wedding ring, the baby, the Cinderella complex seemingly coming into fruition, doesn’t mean much has been figured in reference to holistic health and overall wellbeing. It does not mean it automatically translates over to mental and/or emotional realms and quite often proves with time to be quite the opposite. The artist, the athlete, the suit often have not accessed the more subtle layers of being that offer the opportunity to truly cultivate self-awareness, awareness of others, and how the two are intricately and inextricably connected. Want to learn more? Let’s Apres.

Neurochemicals that make you go Hell Yeah can be the impetus to oh so much. Backed by science, that mix, held within superb yet easy-to-meet structure, can lead to even further progression. Progression leads to fulfillment which leads to peak-to-peak performance and essentially a super fun life. How awesome to put a little extra effort into all realms and find that happy high for not only yourself, but for those around you? The ripple effect is real. So let’s keep it real. #SessionIt
